About the Role – Interim Engineering Intern (Systems)

The Interim Engineering Intern (Systems) role is designed for bright and motivated students who want to gain deep, hands-on experience in wireless communications, baseband modem algorithms, and system engineering.

As an intern, you will work with Qualcomm’s Systems Engineering team, which has historically driven innovations such as cdma2000, HSPA, LTE-Advanced, 5G NR, HetNets, IoT protocols, and satellite communications.

This is a chance to contribute directly to real-world projects, collaborate with industry experts, and gain exposure to the end-to-end innovation process—from conceptual design to performance validation and deployment.


Roles & Responsibilities

During your internship at Qualcomm, you may:

  • Participate in systems engineering activities for 3G, 4G, 5G, WLAN, and satellite communications technologies.
  • Design WWAN modem baseband algorithms, covering performance characterization, fixed-point design, and validation.
  • Perform theoretical and computer-aided analysis to solve advanced wireless communication challenges.
  • Gain in-depth understanding of 3GPP/3GPP2 physical layer specifications.
  • Actively contribute to design and review sessions while supporting Qualcomm’s intellectual property (IP) portfolio.
  • Provide systems support for modem implementations and technical contributions to air interface specifications.
  • Develop hands-on skills in signal processing, interference cancellation, coding theory, adaptive filtering, and advanced receivers.

Skills & Qualifications Required

  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s / Master’s / PhD in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Electronics, or related technical fields.
  • Programming Proficiency: Strong skills in C, C++, MATLAB.
  • Knowledge in Wireless Systems:
    • PHY & MAC Layers
    • Digital Communications, Information & Coding Theory
    • Channel estimation, interference management, equalization, RF impairment mitigation
  • Protocols: Familiarity with 3GPP/3GPP2 standards, OFDMA/CDMA systems, RLC, PDCP, RRC, S1, X2, IP, UDP, TCP, HTTP.
  • Hands-on Computing: Familiarity with UNIX/Windows/Linux platforms.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset with a passion for wireless communication innovation.

Desired Areas of Contribution

  • Experience with wireless modem design (channel decoding, detection, tracking loops).
  • Knowledge of mission-critical applications, IoT protocols, vehicular communications, and 5G eMBB.
  • Interest in radio access and core network design.
  • Strong foundation in signal detection and estimation, mobility management, and multi-user detection.
